History & Philosophy


In the beginning there was a revolutionary idea! At the beginning of the 1970s the cousins, businessman Aloys Coppenrath and master confectioner Josef Wiese, had a vision: they wanted to produce these premium quality Cream Tortes and Cakes, sold through food retailers that taste as good as home made. At that time a revolution! Immediate deep freezing was the magic word.

1975
Aloys Coppenrath and Josef Wiese found their company, a confectionary business in a converted dairy in Westerkappeln, Westphalia. They start with 35 employees and their first product, the Viennese Selection consisting of six delicious cream cakes, is an instant hit for German ‘coffee and cakes’.



1976
Their product range is widened as a result of consumer demand for classic cream gateaux such as Black Forest Gateau which is still one of best-sellers today. In the eighties exquisitely baked cakes and strudel are added to the range.



1986

The first fully-automated high rack deep-freeze warehouse comes into operation in Osnabrück-Atter. This means that the firm remains in control of production, storage and delivery.


1991-1992
To keep up with the constant increase in consumer demand for frozen bakery products across the length and breadth of Germany a second production plant is built in Mettingen, Westphalia where, in spite of its size, a lot of the factory’s work is still in the hands of skilled confectioners.


1993
Deregulation of the freight forwarding business enables the company to set up a subsidiary Overnight – Tiefkühlservice. The wholly-owned subsidiary at present transports 600,000 pallets a year with its own fleet of 39 lorries.


1997
Germany’s first ready baked frozen rolls, ‘Unsere Goldstücke’, are introduced and consumers are immediately convinced by their natural taste and the unique quality of their production.


2001

The ever increasing demand for ‘single’ or ‘for two’ products is catered for by the Cafeteria range of Mini Baked Snacks and Cake Slices.


2003
Convenience products from the freezer are increasingly popular on the domestic and foreign markets. The expansion of the plant in Mettingen continues and production is transferred there completely from Westerkappeln. The entire production is then located in Mettingen and the goods are distributed worldwide from there.

2006
The success of the ‘Goldstücke’ is followed up by the new Spelt and Organic Rolls whose special target group is the health-conscious consumer.


2007

New gateau trends are set by the introduction of the Finest Cream Stracciatella-Cherry Gateau, the current favourite among the gateaux.


Present day

Coppenrath & Wiese has over 1800 employees who produce and distribute the popular frozen bakery products. Their range consists of 60 products including cream gateaux, baked cakes, traycakes, cream roulades and slices, strudel, mini-baked snacks, frozen rolls and baguettes.
